At the adjourned meeting of Mayo County Council on Friday, Fine Gael Councillor Jarlath Munnelly queried the amount being allocated in the budget for postage in the planning office.
The expected 2009 figure is €75,000 and Cllr Munnelly queried this high spending on postage. The chair of the planning and development SPC asked whether there was a need to send a registered letter to every person who makes a submission on a planning application to notify them that the application has been determined. He cited an example from Dublin City Council, where alternatives to sending a registered letter are used.
However, Director of Services Joe Loftus stated that people who make submissions on planning applications have to be notified in accordance with the law, but that he would undertake a review of the council’s postage procedures in the planning office.
