“Life is sweeter under the sea.” So sings the quirky Jamaican lobster Sebastian in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Fáilte Ireland is certainly hoping visitors to Mayo will agree and take the opportunity to sample the county’s underwater attractions in a series of new snorkelling trails launching in the next few weeks.
The Blueway, a series of water tourism trails in Galway and Mayo, is the first of its kind in Ireland, and Fáilte Ireland will use the pilot scheme here to determine if a nationwide Blueway initiative promoting kayaking and snorkelling trails would benefit rural, coastal, economies.
Brian Quinn, Fáilte Ireland, is coordinating the development of the Blueway. He said the project involves the erection of information boards outlining the water activity attractions and suggested snorkelling and kayaking trails at three Mayo locations, two in Achill and one near Louisburgh.
“This will make these water activities much more accessible and easier for the majorty of people, who may not have tried this type of activity before.”
He anticipates the trails will add to the beach economy, particularly around lessons, equipment, and wetsuit rentals.
More details on the trails will be announced when the Blueway is officially launched in February.
