Stormy battering continues but end is in sight

The stormy conditions which have been battering the county continue today (Monday ) but look set to abate later this week.

Met Eireann is forecasting calmer weather this week with Wednesday morning starting 'bright and dry in most areas'.

The national forecaster predicts Thursday will be a cold, bright day with light winds.

Friday will be milder and winds will remain light.

Mayo is counting the cost this morning of some of the worst storm conditions to hit the west in recent memory.

High tides are still causing problems today.

A huge tidal swell was reported to hit the Achill coast line at about 7.30 am, wreaking destruction on private property and public infrastructure.

Flooding has caused disruption and damage to homes, businesses, public areas and other amenities in many parts of the county, including Ballina, Belmullet, Newport and Westport.

Extensive damage is reported to dunes and the carpark at the blue flag Bertra Beach, near Murrisk.

Local authority services, emergency services, ESB and Eircom crews continue to work around the clock to tackle the storm damage.

More than 1,100 customers are without electricity this morning in Mayo and Eircom is still trying to fix extensive faults which caused outages at hundreds of homes in recent days.
