Ballina Aware Support Group venue change

The Ballina Aware support group for people experiencing depression and/or anxiety is moving to the Community Centre on Teeling Street from Monday, January 13, and will meet every Monday at 8 p.m.

The support group provides a free, confidential, safe and supportive space for people with depression/anxiety to come together to explore options and coping skills. No appointment necessary, just go along on the evening, you are very welcome. New sports capital funding announced

A new €40 million fund for important sports capital projects has been announced by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring.

The Sports Capital Programme is the main channel of Government support for developing sports facilities and purchasing sports equipment for sports clubs and organisations across Ireland.

Art exhibition Custom House Studios

The annual end of year exhibition featuring 47 artists working at Custom House Studios during 2013 continues until January 12 at Westport Quay.

The exhibition comprises a wide variety of works and media reflective of a diverse community of artists including works in drawing, printmaking and bronze sculpture from seven participants from Carrowbeg Enterprises Westport, who have participated in a county-wide programme UPSTART 2013 from the Arts Office of Mayo County Council, facilitating participation in the arts for people with disabilities to mark International Disability Day with support from Carrowbeg Enterprises, Custom House Studios and Allergan Foundation International.

Ballina Family Resource Centre

Ballina Family Resource Centre is closed for the Christmas break and will return on January 6, 2014, at 9.30am.

We wish all our service users a very happy Christmas and a joyful New Year.

Ballycroy card game

The Drumgallagh NS, Ballycroy, Christmas card game was cancelled due to the power cut on December 18.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. This card game will be rescheduled in the New Year and any tickets sold will be valid. Thank you to all who sponsored prizes for the game.

Scoil Muire agus Pádraig

Staff and students of Scoil Muire agus Pádraig presented a Celebration of Christmas in Swinford Parish Church on December 18.

The presentation included music, readings and reflections for the festive season. In spite of bad weather conditions there was a huge attendance and those who braved the elements were treated to a wonderful display of the talent among the staff and student body of the school.

Principal Mrs Quinn paid tribute to all those who prepared for and participated in the experience.

Westdoc funding Achill and Erris

Funding for Westdoc in the Achill and Erris area is to continue in 2014 from the Onerous Rota Fund to Achill and Erris GPs.

The funding is provided to Achill and Erris because their rural location means it’s not feasible for those GPs to engage in the normal WESTDOC rota.

The out-of-hours arrangement provides a service for over 6,000 patients including cover to the off-shore islands of Clare Island and Inishbiggle.

Further LEADER funding

A new allocation of €240,000 in extra LEADER funding was announced for South West Mayo Development Company together with an allocation of €57,000 for the Gaeltacht areas.

The funding will go to projects which were approved, subject to additional funding being provided.

Brackloon reunion DVD

A DVD is available of the Brackloon reunion.

The DVD, which costs €8, is available at Herr’s and Forde’s in The Square. It is also available at The Gem on Bridge Street.

Creative writing in Claremorris

The Creative Writing Group meets every Friday in Claremorris Family Resource Centre.

ISPCC Mayo volunteers

ISPCC Mayo is recruiting volunteers for its Childline service.

If you feel you have a listening ear and a genuine, positive interest in making a difference in childrens’ lives, then why not get involved?

Childline is a listening service for children and young people. Volunteers are fully trained to listen and support in a non-judgemental way.

Westport Town budget

Westport Town Council will meet on Thursday, January 9, to consider and adopt the town budget for 2014.

The budget includes €4.8 million expenditure for 2014 and proposes no increase in commercial and industrial rates on 2013 levels.
