Eating and drinking aplenty in the season of goodwill

Irish people will munch their way through an astonishing five million boxes of chocolate and guzzle 48 million bottles of beer in the festive season.

That is according to Repak, which promotes the recycling of used packaging.

The organisation released estimates of what we consume during the Christmas holidays in a bid to get us all to think a little bit about waste and recycling.

The estimates show we exchange more than 12 million gifts and consume enough alchohol to fill 24 Olympic sized swimming pools during the season of goodwill!

This all generates more than 74,000 tonnes of used packaging.

Bill Collins, Interim CEO, Repak, said: “We would ask the public to keep recycling over the holiday season. To help dispose of excess used recyclables, visit Recyclemore.ie or download our Recyclemore smartphone app to find local recycling facilities, seasonal opening times, and alternative bring sites.”
