Long, thick hair is one of the most sought after styles for women. And little wonder with celebrities like Catherine Zeta Jones, Beyonce and Demi Moore all rocking glamourous, lenghty locks on the red carpet.
The only problem is growing it yourself. The average person’s hair grows just half an inch a month so it takes about a year to add six inches in length.
That’s why more and more women (many celebrities included ) are turning to extensions for help with their tresses.
Castlebar hair experts HnBC - Hair and Beauty Centre - is an importer, wholesaler and retailer of hair replacement systems, including real human hair and synthetic hair extensions, wigs and hair pieces.
Owner Mary Safo says their real human hair extensions are a huge attraction.
There are, however, a few myths about hair extensions. So Mary gave us an overview of three of the most common myths.
Myth 1
Hair Extensions are bad for your hair
Truth: “Professionally applied hair extensions with the right maintenance advice given, should cause no damage at all. Some ladies have problems with their hair with or without hair extensions and such ladies should seek professional advice before having extensions. That is why it is crucial that pre-application consultation is carried out by the hair extensionist to determine the most suitable extension system based on the client’s needs. The fact is that hair extensions can be a great way to grow the hair out.”
Myth 2
Extensions limit your lifestyle
Truth: “Good quality human hair extensions, like the HnBC brand, can be treated like your normal hair, meaning it can be coloured, curled and restyled whilst ensuring the right hair care products are used. For instance, the weaving system when used to apply hair extensions will allow one to swim, go into saunas, steam rooms, shampoo and condition the hair without worrying about getting hair bonds loose at the roots. You can tie your hair up regardless of whatever hair system is applied.”
Myth 3:
Hair extensions last four to six months
Truth: Certainly a bond, bead, tape or a weave can attach itself to the hair for as long as four to six months. However, when the hair starts to grow, the extensions hang so low away from the scalp that it can easily be pulled, causing a patch. Secondly, the hair begins to twist and since the new growth is not being combed out before washing that causes the new growth to tangle.
Ms Safo offered a final piece of advice for anyone thinking about a new look for the New Year.
“Hair extensions are very popular amongst ladies and once a professional hair extensionist is found, a good quality hair and a suitable application method is advised, it can become an indispensable and useful service, because you will always have lovely beautiful hair that will boost confidence levels.
“It is also advisable for clients to remain loyal to their hair extensionist to allow effective, consistent hair care and treatment between hair extension applications, which will allow the client to enjoy all the benefits that comes with hair extensions.”
