Lollipops carrying a road safety message “ Never Let a Friend Walk Home Drunk” will be distributed at night clubs in Mayo over the festive season.
The aim of the road safety campaign is to get younger (17 to 24 ) and older (50 plus ) male pedestrians who are most at risk and who believe they can safely drink and walk home (if they are careful ) to realise the danger they are putting themselves in by telling them that two thirds of pedestrians killed on Irish roads had consumed alcohol.
Noel Gibbons, road safety officer, said: “This campaign is about protecting each and every person who uses the roads so that we can all have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.”
Joe Corcoran, hotel manager, said: “We are very happy to be involved with any campaign that can save a life. This is a fantastic initiative by the Road Safety Department of Mayo County Council and the Westport Plaza and Castlecourt Hotel Resort is delighted to be involved with the campaign.”
