Footprint evidence was used to solve a spate of church break-ins in Belmullet and Ballina earlier this year.
Superintendent Gerry Donnelly said a footprint was taken and matched to seized footwear to identify the suspect.
“The match proved positive and is just as effective as fingerprint identification,” said the superintendent.
