Balla murder accused in court today

The man charged with the murder of Sara Staunton is to appear before Harristown Court in Castlerea this morning (Friday ) at 10.30am.

Ray Gralton, 22, with an address at Mount Prospect, Roscommon, was charged with murder on Monday afternoon at Castlebar Garda Station. He made no reply to the charge.

Gralton appeared before a special sitting of Ballina District Court at 3.30pm on Monday.

Dressed in a rust-coloured hoody, dark tracksuit pants, and runners, he said nothing during the brief sitting. He stood with his arms behind his back when Judge Mary Devins arrived for the special court, which lasted just two minutes.

Gralton was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown Court again this morning.

The body of mother-of-two Sara Staunton was discovered at her home at Portagh between Mayo Abbey and Balla on Saturday afternoon. Gardaí launched a murder investigation on Sunday following the results of a post mortem examination at Mayo General Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Gary Walsh arrested and charged Gralton with murder at Castlebar Garda Station on Monday afternoon.
