Shell E&P Limited wins at road safety awards

Shell E&P Limited has won the business category Leading Lights in Road Safety Award for its safe driving programme, developed to promote safety as part of their Corrib Gas project and in the Erris region. The aim of this programme is to minimise the road safety impacts of Shell’s operations while sharing knowledge and experience of road safety with the community, in order to improve driver behaviour and reduce the number of injuries/fatalities on the roads.

Shell accepted the award at the sixth annual Road Safety Authority (RSA ) Leading Lights in Road Safety awards. A total of 29 awards were presented by RSA chairman Gay Byrne at the awards ceremony.

The Shell E&P Ltd Safe Driving Programme was developed in 2008 and has been evolving on a continual basis with additional campaigns added every year. The safe driving programme comprises the following: A defensive driving programme which is mandatory for all Shell staff; a safe driving DVD which focuses on driver behaviour and how to cope with hazards – this has been distributed to all staff on the Corrib project, every home in Erris, and all TY students in Erris; safe winter driving campaign, a joint campaign involving Shell, the RSA, and IBEC West, where road safety driving packs are distributed to all IBEC affiliated companies in the west; distribution of safety kits; second level safety driving programme for all TY and fifth year students in Erris; and professional driver CPC courses.

Since the programme was developed, more than 1,500 road safety kits have been distributed.
