Castlebar Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the move by Castlebar Town Council to provide free car parking at designated times in the run up to Christmas.
Chamber secretary Sylvester Jennings said the motion which was adopted by the councillors at last week’s monthly meeting was “pro business”.
“This is a positive initiative by the members of Castlebar Town Council and something chamber members have been looking for. The elected representatives have done their part and the onus is now on the local traders to ensure that Castlebar is an attractive and inviting shopping destination this Christmas,” Mr Jennings said.
The motion, which was proposed by Councillor Brendan Henaghan and seconded by Cllr Harry Barrett will see free parking in the town centre car parks all day on the last three Saturdays before Christmas, and from 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday, during the last three shopping weeks before Christmas, as well as on December 23 and 24.
The chamber congratulated Castlebar Town Council for listening to the wishes of the local business community and for being proactive in helping make the town attractive to shoppers this festive season. Arising from the same meeting Castlebar Town Council has also committed to looking at the cost of parking in the county town in the new year.
