A life-long volunteer from Mayo has been shortlisted for the Charity Hero Award, a national prize honouring individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to good causes.
Frankie Forde-Waldron from Castlebar is among just ten people from across Ireland shortlisted for the prestigious life-time achievement award, which is presented by The Wheel, a national body representing 930 charities, in association with the Volunteer Ireland Awards.
Frankie has been involved with the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation since it was set up 20 years ago and has always been passionate about the organisation. For the past 15 years she has used her annual leave to take groups of volunteer walkers on the Hospice's Annual Cape Cod Walk which, to date, has raised in excess of €850,000. She plans the walks with local help and looks after all of the organisational and the various health and safety concerns for the group whilst out walking. The walking groups have received recognition and official greetings from the Governor of the State of Massachusetts and from Boston City Council.
The Charity Hero Award in association with the Volunteer Ireland Awards is part of Better Together, a nationwide campaign which aims to make Ireland a better place to live by building support for charities, clubs and associations in communities across Ireland.
The public are now invited to vote for their favourite nominees atwww.bettertogether.ie (voting closes on December 6 ). The recipient of Ireland’s Charity Hero Award will be awarded a cash prize of €1,000 to donate to their chosen cause. The winner will be announced at the Better Together Awards in Dublin on Thursday December 12.
