The National Forum on Europe’s Transition Year Public Speaking Competition has been completed in Co Mayo. The next stage of the competition is the regional final which will take place in Sligo before Christmas. Sancta Maria College in Louisburgh will be representing Mayo at this stage of the competition where they will be competing against two schools from Cavan and Monaghan.
The four students on the Sancta Maria College team are Jillian O’Malley, Molly O’Toole, Oisin McDonagh and David O’Malley as their substitute. The team has received assistance from their transition year class as encouraged by the competition format and has been guided excellently by their teacher, Ms Bridget Donnelly. The quality of all entrants has been superb with participants displaying excellent public speaking skills and superb insight toward the EU. Jim Higgins MEP has congratulated the Louisburgh team for getting to this stage of the competition and the interest shown by everyone involved.
Mr Higgins said: “This competition has been running for seven years and is an outstanding success for the National Forum on Europe as it is bringing the work of the European Union into the classroom and allowing students to engage in topics that are of interest to them. It provides participants with knowledge not just of the European Union, but encourages vital communication skills that will benefit them in future years.”
