Prison for woman who handled stolen property

A woman who had a stolen phone in her posession was sentenced to 28 days in prison at Castlebar District Court this week

A complaint was made to gardai on July 7 2013 by Gareth Grimley who was working in Robinsons Garage, Spencer Street, Castlebar. He said that €12 and a €250 Samsung mobile phone had been taken and that a white Toyota Avensis was observed leaving the area.

Garda John Melia was aware that the car belonged to Martin McDonagh and called to his caravan which is located at Casey’s forecourt, Turlough Road, Castlebar. As gardaí approached the caravan the phone number that had been stolen was called and it could be heard ringing inside the caravan. Winnie McDonagh was heard saying to her children: “Quick hide the mobile phone its ringing, the shades are here.” The property was recovered.

McDonagh said that the phone was in the caravan but was not brought by her to the caravan.

The mother of five has five previous convictions — four of these for theft

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined her €300 for handling stolen property and sentenced her to 28 days in prison.
