Local man Greg Barry is undertaking to complete five challenges in six months in order to raise money for The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. So far he has completed four of the five—seven climbs of Croagh Patrick, The Westport Duathlon, The Warriors Run, and Achill Roar, with Sea 2 Summit remaining which will take place tommorrow November 9.
Barry says a few years ago he decided to get fit and live a healthier lifestyle, and he found “I was able to raise decent amounts of money for local charities which gave that extra push and motivation I needed to train hard and be ready for these events.”
He chose MS as a charity to support “as an old school friend who had MS passed away in 2011, my brother in law was diagnosed with MS, and a small number of acquaintances both at work and socially had a diagnosis or had a spouse/partner with a diagnosis of MS.” Barry said: “None of these people had a financial need but it had MS at the forefront of mind, and through my own work and interaction with the outreach worker for MS Ireland I learned of their very limited resources and their reliance on fundraising to provide essential service and support to their members. As fundraising has become a very competitive space in recent times, and so many good causes needing to fight for every euro, I needed to come up with something that would capture the imagination of friends and family and the general public.”
