The news that Mayo County Council has the process started for the takeover of 43 estates and roads in the Claremorris electoral area was described as a “major step forward” by one councillor at the November meeting of the Claremorris Electoral Area.
Padraig Flanagan, senior executive officer for the council, told the meeting: “There are 43 roads and estates from Claremorris, Ballinrobe, and Ballyhaunis that have been out on public display and we hope that we will be able to progress with most of them by the full December meeting of the council.”
Independent councillor Richard Finn said that it was “major step forward by Mayo County Council and I’d like to compliment the staff in the offices who’ve done so much work in this area.”
Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke said: “This is probably the biggest number of estates and roads to be taken over by the council in one go in history, it’s very welcome news for all.”
Cllr Patsy O’Brien asked for confirmation that the money that was paid down in bonds on estates be ringfenced for work on those estates, which he was informed would happen. Cllr John Cribben said it was important that people realised that when the council takes over an estate it was just for the essential services, such as the lighting, footpaths, and sewerage, not grass cutting and things like that.
