Launch of Endurance Challenge in Westport

Organisers of the Endurance Challenge 2,068km triathlon, which will take place in August 2014, will be in Westport on Friday October 25 and Saturday October 26 for a regional launch to drive awareness of and support for the event, which will include a cycle tour of the west and a marathon in Westport.

Endurance Challenge 2068 will see two ordinary men, James Colbert and Sean Buckley, take on Ireland’s biggest ever triathlon feat by cycling through every county in Ireland, swimming 120km of the River Shannon, and running in four consecutive marathons, a total of 2,068km all in just 22 days. The event is in memory of Sean’s father who passed away from cancer last year, and aims to raise €500,000 for Breakthrough Cancer Research.

During the 22 day challenge, members of the public can join Sean and James in Endurance Challenge 2068 at one of the four marathons taking place throughout Ireland (one of which will be held in Westport ), or on four regional cycle tours (the Connacht tour will take place over two days, covering approximately 340km, starting and ending in Galway.

Those potentially interested in participating in the event are invited along to a free promotional evening from 6pm, on Friday October 25 at Clew Bay Hotel where Sean and James give some motivational advice and tips. The Endurance committee will also be there on the evening to sign people up for the Challenge in 2014, and will also be recruiting a regional volunteer committee.

The following day, on Saturday October 26, those interested in kick-starting their training can join Sean and James in a free promotional 5k fun run or fun cycle. The run will start at 9.30am at Greenway Park, the event is free but requires advance online registration on www.parkrun.ie/westport .
