St Anne’s BC, Westport’s Ray Moylette will go into action today in the last 32 of the IABA World Championships in Almaty in Kazakhstan against Ermek Sakenov from Kyrgyzstan in the afternoon session.
In the opening round of the competition Moylette progressed on a split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28 ) against Greek light-welter Alexandros Tsanikidis after three close rounds. Moylette lost the first round 10-9 on all three judges score cards, before winning the next two rounds on two of three judges’ cards to securer the split decision. Moylette who has won gold in the youth version of this event in 2008 before going on to win gold in the European championships in 2011.
The light-welterweight said after winning his first bout: “I was in there to get a job done and I got the job done. It’s not one of the prettiest of wins, but a win is a win at the end of the day and we have something to build on.”
