MEP Higgins calls for National Internship Strategy to be developed

Fine Gael MEP for the North West Jim Higgins has called on the Irish Government to draw up a national strategy to create and regulate internship positions for young workers. Mr Higgins believes that it is vital for the future of our economy that young workers are well trained and experienced.

Mr Higgins said: “Internships are a valuable source of experience for a young person trying to enter the working world and they give young people insight into working life and gain experience and ability.

“In order for Ireland to expand our knowledge-based economy there is a need for better trained workers. I strongly believe that by introducing a comprehensive internship programme in Ireland it will help to fill this vacuum of experienced and well-trained young workers in our economy. At the moment we have an exceptionally well-educated workforce but many young people find it hard to gain practical experience in their chosen profession,” he said.

Mr Higgins pointed out that it is very important that the Government introduces guidelines which must be adhered to by employers when dealing with interns and condemned the fact that many interns have to endure long hours, low wages and, in many cases, no remuneration.

“Young workers are vital for the future of our economy and it is important that they are respected and treated properly,” concluded Higgins.
