The Labour Party in Mayo has called for a united political campaign in the county town to lobby the Minister for the Environment on behalf of Councillor Noel Campbell. Cllr Campbell has been precluded from contesting next year’s local elections due to a rule that bars certain civil service grades from political office.
Labour’s PRO Harry Barrett praised Cllr Campbell: “Castlebar Town Council has lost a brilliant political talent in Cllr Campbell. He was firmly in tune with the needs of the town and was always available to his constituents. The political establishment in this town needs people of his calibre and every effort should be made to have him reinstated.”
Mr Barrett added that “Labour in Mayo will agree to any proposal that will allow Cllr Campbell to go forward for election. A united political effort must be made to have an exception made for him, as it is patently clear that his employment will never put him in a conflict of interest situation. Labour would be happy to lend our support in any effort in this regard.”
