Search for Mayo's top youth volunteers launched

The search is on for Mayo's top youth volunteers. Those who inspire by giving and who ask for nothing in return. Second-level schools across county Mayo are being asked to nominate those unsung heroes whose motivation is simply to give of their time, energy and spirit to make a positive impact on their community or those around them.

The 2014 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards is the only programme in Ireland that honours and celebrates youth volunteerism. Now in its eighth year, the programme has recognised more than 1,500 students in over 120 schools.

Post-primary students can complete their applications by visiting www.pramerica.ie/spirit Applications must be submitted to the school principal by October 25. Principals will review the applications and nominate one student in the junior category (for students up to age 16 ) and one student in the senior category (for students 16 to 19 years old ). The deadline for school’s final nominations is November 8.

In February 2014, judges will select 20 finalists who will each receive a certificate of merit, €500, an engraved silver medallion and an invitation to the Gala Awards dinner to be held in Donegal in March 2014. Two All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year will be selected at the awards dinner. Each will receive €1,000 for a charity of their choice, a gold medallion and an all-expenses paid trip to the United States to attend the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremony.
