Two Mayo boxers in World youth and junior semi-finals today

The hard work being done by the boxers and coaches in Mayo continues to garner success on the biggest stage this week, with at least two Mayo girls guaranteed at least bronze medals in the World Female Youth and Junior Boxing Championships which are taking place in Bulgaria.

Jacqui Lynch from Golden Gloves and Ciara Ginty from Gesalla are through to the semi-finals of the competition which will take place today, after winning their quarter-finals on Wednesday. Lynch saw off the challenge of Ukraine’s Zorina Boikiv on a split decision in the 48kg quarter final. Lynch is the current EU champion and will face Russian Ekaterina Paltceva in the last four bout.

Ginty won her 60kg last eight contest on a unanimous decision from all three judges against Ukrainian Karyna Takara. She will go on to face Yekaterina Annissimova from Kazakhstan today in the semi-final. Unfortunately Swinford’s Ciara Sheedy lost out on a split decision in her quarter final in a very tight call against Australian Vaolele Schuester. The two other Mayo boxers in the tournament Grainne Gavin from Castlebar and Lycia Heneghan of Aglish boxing club bowed out earlier in the week from the competition.

Moylette off to the worlds

Ray Moylette will look to put a couple of years of injury and disappointment behind him when he heads off to the World Elite Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this weekend ahead of the championships starting on October 11. The St Anne’s boxer has been selected as part of a nine strong team for the championships and will box at the light-welterweight 64kg grade. Moylette has got his chance after his old foe Ross Hickey broke an arm during training and Rohan Date against whom he was due to box for a place in the squad had to pull out of the competition. Moylette who has shown his quality at major international championships in the past, picking up the 2008 World Youth Championships gold and gold again at the 2011 European championships in Turkey, will be looking to put in a good showing as he works his way towards a place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
