A neighbourhood watch scheme for the town of Westport has been rolled out, with a text alert system to also be implemented in the Westport area in the coming month.
Superintendent Aidan Foley said that a number of neighbourhood watch schemes that were dormant were amalgamated into one at the Quay which had a recent successful launch. The superintendent said that he intends to build on this neighbourhood watch and any other area in Westport which wishes to come on board are asked to contact Westport Garda Station. Supt Foley explained that there can be one neighbourhood watch for the size of the town with different street co-ordinators in every area.
The superintendent said that two areas have been identified by gardaí for a text alert scheme—one in the town and one outside, however he did not name the areas until people in these localities have been notified.
