Mayo General Hospital, which has dispatched a letter to all doctors who requested the prostate-specific antigen (PSA ) test between July 6, 2012 and June 25, 2013 advising them about the international field safety notice.
A review of the use of the kit in Mayo General Hospital confirmed that just over 15,000 tests were used on more than 11,000 patients over the 12-month period. Analysis of the data confirmed that 661 patients were above the upper reference limits.
Mayo General Hospital is in further contact with all referring doctors, notifying each doctor of the specific patients who require further follow up. The hospital will work with referring doctors to ensure that each patient’s case is examined in detail and will only contact patients if that becomes necessary. It is expected this process will be completed by October 4. Patients do not need to take any action and affected patients will be contacted by October 11.
