Man caught driving without insurance twice in the same day

A man who was twice detected driving with no insurance by the same garda in the space of 24 hours was before Castlebar District Court this week.

On April 1 2013 at 12.35am, Garda John Melia stopped the car of Colm Maughan, Apt 1, The Diner, Moneen, Castlebar, at Springfield. Maughan was asked to produce his driving documents and failed to produce them.

The same day at 11.45pm, Maughan was stopped driving by the regional support unit at Moneen and Garda Melia attended the scene. The car was seized as Maughan was driving while uninsured.

The defendant has six previous road traffic convictions.

Solicitor for Maughan, James Ward, said that his client is completing community service at the moment. Mr Ward said that the defendant is not drinking or using drugs any more.

Judge Mary Devins asked Maughan why he drove twice on the same day while uninsured, Maughan replied that he was drunk and on drugs at the time. Garda Melia said that Maughan was sober on both occasions when he dealt with him. “I was drinking your honour,” was Maughan’s response to this.

Judge Devins adjourned the case to February 5 2014.
