They are 30 to 40mm in length when they are fully grown and once hatched they start feasting on the grass roots and stem bases leaving the lawn in an unsightly and weak condition and they can continue to do their damage right through to next June.
The devastation caused by these pests doesn't become immediately obvious but in the spring the first visible signs can be seen when straw coloured patches of turf appear which will later become brown or even bare. Another good indication that there may be leatherjackets present is birds regularly feeding on the lawn, pecking at the ground and digging for the grubs or there may be areas of moss where there is little or no grass present at all.
