Westport Arts Festival announces this year’s annual film event

This year the Westport Arts Festival offers a diverse line up of acts and events from Ireland and further afield. One of these is the Westport Arts Film Event 2013, which will be showcasing award-winning independent film shorts on Sunday September 29 from 2pm to 10pm at Westport’s Cineplex on James Street.

This one-day event brings both first time filmmakers and established directors together in a screening of 18 shorts, some of which have officially been selected, nominated, and won best titles at internationally renowned film festivals. Also in attendance to celebrate this event will be directors Nicky Dowd, Chris Thomas, Richard Standen and Tom Stanley. These directors will be taking part in a live discussion about the making of their films and share their observations and expertise of filmmaking.

TV’s Pierce O’Reilly and Edel Golden will be collaborating with event organiser, Mazza Ray, in the production of this event, televising highlights from the event and also hosting the directors’ Q&A section.

Commenting on the launch, festival chairperson Michele O’Malley said: “Over the course of the history of the Westport Arts Festival both the artists and existing community have worked together to ensure that this festival is a success, for those who are exhibiting and for the ancillary business which a festival like this generates.”

“We were thrilled to get involved with the Westport Arts Film Event. Westport is our hometown and it is a media event so it was a natural fit for us to get involved. We’re looking forward to it and we’d love Westport to become one of the highlights of the short film calendar. I must commend the team behind it, especially Michelle O’Malley festival chairperson,” commented Mr O’Reilly.

Mazza Ray added: “This is a great opportunity for filmmakers and film lovers to gain a unique insight into the development of independent filmmaking.”
