Woman with leg injuries airlifted off Croagh Patrick

A woman was airlifted off Croagh Patrick on Monday evening having suffered lower leg injuries and hypothermia near the summit.

Mayo Mountain Rescue was called to the incident which occurred approximately 20 to 30 metres from the summit. A full team call-out was deployed and Rescue 115 - the Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter service from Shannon, was called to assist.

However, due to poor weather and strong winds the chopper was unable to assist the casualty at the site of the accident. The local rescue team carried the woman down the cone section of the mountain to the shoulder.

According to a Mayo Mountain Rescue spokesperson from the shoulder of the mountain Rescue 115 was able to transport the casualty to Mayo General Hospital for further treatment.

The rescue team concluded their mission at 9.30pm and thanked everyone who assisted.
