Castlebar Rugby Club will be holding a fundraising Barn Dance on Saturday August 31, starting at 9pm. Tickets cost €20 each in advance, €25 on the door.
The main music act will be The Outlaws (supported by several local bands ).
Since its foundation in 1970, Castlebar Rugby Club has continued to develop - year on year – and this development has really accelerated in recent times.
In 1986, the club was one of the first junior clubs in Ireland to build its own clubhouse. The ongoing development on the pitches means that Castlebar RFC can now boast some of the best facilities in Irish junior rugby. In recent years, the underage section of the club has blossomed, and the increase in numbers has put huge strain on the existing resources – especially dressing rooms and training pitches. At the same time, the emergence of a Castlebar Ladies’ rugby team has also driven the requirements for dressing rooms and training pitches. Ladies’ rugby is currently one of the fastest-growing sports in the world! It is great to see such development, but the club needs to expand to cater for it.
As part of the club’s development programme, there is a plan to build two additional changing rooms and an all-weather training area. This development cannot be funded from annual memberships (as they all go towards the day-to-day running of the club ). The club has had to come up with unique events to help raise the necessary funds. The Barn Dance is the first of these events. The barn (based on a real American barn ) will be assembled on site (beside the clubhouse ) in the days leading up to the dance. The event has a quality music line-up with The Outlaws headlining and several local bands supporting. The day will start off with the first match in this season’s Junior League, which will see Connemara (just down from the All Ireland League ) taking on Castlebar. Kick-off for this game is at 5pm. Tickets are available from behind the bar in Bosh, or in Casey’s Centra, or from all rugby club members. There will be a shuttle-bus service from Chapel Street to and from the rugby club on Saturday night, starting at 8.30pm.
