Westport Train Station was this week awarded the accolade of best in Ireland as voted by its passengers and tourists.
The announcement was welcomed by local Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring who congratulated the Irish Rail staff for picking up this latest award.
Westport Train Station was declared Ireland’s Best Train Station at the Iarnród Éireann Best Station Awards. It came out on top in the four criteria of the text and email poll for staff helpfulness, staff appearance, station appearance, and customer information.
“This is great news for Westport and completes a hat-trick of tourism awards. According to The Irish Times, Westport is the best place to live in Ireland. The town recently won a tidy towns award, and now tourists can now look forward to being welcomed at the best train station in Ireland,” said a delighted Minister Ring who congratulated Westport station manager Anne Elliot and her team, “who work very hard to ensure that customers get the highest level of service at the station.”
According to Minister Ring this award is more proof that Westport is Ireland’s premier tourism town. “I urge tourists coming to Ireland: come and find out why Westport keeps on winning awards!”
David Franks, chief executive of Iarnród Éireann, said: “Winning the title of Best Station in Ireland is a high honour and I congratulate station manager Anne Elliot and all her team at Westport.”
He added: “Our customers are the most important part of our business so it is fitting that they should choose the winner of the Best Station Awards and all the hard work in Westport has certainly paid off.”
A crystal locomotive trophy was presented to Ms Elliot and her team and will be on display in Westport Station throughout 2013.
