Diesel dumping at Murrisk pier

Locals in Murrisk are up in arms about what they have described as ongoing pollution at the local pier.

One outraged local contacted the Mayo Advertiser yesterday (Thursday ) to complain about persistent pollution by fishermen at the pier.

The caller said a complaint had been lodged with Westport Town Council last year but no action had been taken and the problem continues.

At the crux of the problem is the dumping of diesel from fishing boats into the water at the pier. It means that local children cannot swim in the area, a problem that has become more obvious since the fine spell of weather commenced this week.

The caller also pointed out that the oil on the water poses an environmental risk to fish and other sea life.
