It’s festival time in Westport so let’s Get Out There

Get ready for a whole week of exciting activities in the great outdoors around Westport and join in to both free and ticketed events. The Westport Duathlon Weekend event marks the beginning of an extensive activity programme for the Westport Get Out There Festival, organised by Westport Town Council and Westport Leisure Park, and runs from Saturday June 8 to Saturday June 15.

Activities on the programme include the Westport Smarter Travel Challenge, outdoor gym sessions, yoga in the park, the Greenway edible landscape project, a guided walk on the Greenway with author Iris Galloway, adventure activities, primary school bicycle fun day, toddlers and trikes, playschool walkers, survival skills with Mayo Mountain Rescue.... and the list goes on. All this will be happening in Westport and coincides with the Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival.

What is the Westport Smarter Travel Challenge?

The Westport Smarter Travel Challenge is a fun, free, event where every trip taken to and from work by bike, on foot, by public transport, or by car pooling earns you points. By completing the challenge you could be in with a chance to win tickets to the Westport Festival of Music and Food 2013. The aim of this challenge is to promote more sustainable travel in Westport and the surrounding areas. The challenge will run for the duration of the Get Out There Festival and National Bike Week. To participate in the challenge, collect your Smarter Travel Challenge Cards from a number of venues around town:

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ireland hosting the Special Olympics join our friends from Special Olympics for two events during the Get Out There Festival. On Monday June 10 there will be a walk on the Greenway and demonstration of outdoor fitness equipment led by a fitness instructor from Westport Leisure Park - refreshments afterwards. On Wednesday June 12 there will be Special Olympics bocce, an Italian game similar to bowls, at 4.30pm at the Skatepark.

The finale of the Get Out There Festival will be marked by the Westport Triathlon and a number of adventure activities around the town hosted by Adventure West and The Adventure Islands. Activities will include an abseil from the roof of the Leisure Park, kayaking and paddle boarding on the mall, zipline and high-ropes course at Westport House.
