Jobs under threat as Cost Plus Sofas close stores

Jobs at the Castlebar Cost Plus Sofas megastore in Castlebar, which opened in 2011, may be under threat following a statement from the company on Wednesday that it is restructuring the business which will involve the closure of many stores.

A statement on the company’s website reads: “Existing customers please note that all current outstanding orders, contracts and agreements will be honoured, completed and delivered as agreed. All current guarantees and warranties will continue to be honoured. If you are awaiting delivery of an outstanding order, you need not take any action. We will contact you as soon as your order comes into stock.”

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on jobs, Dara Calleary, said: “This news comes as yet another blow for the retail sector in Ireland. Unfortunately Cost Plus Sofas is just the latest large retailer to get into serious difficulty. Each time, large numbers of jobs are lost or put at risk. When will the Government wake up to the ever deepening crisis in the retail sector? While the immediate concern today must be for the staff at Cost Plus Sofas, the Government needs to take decisive steps to rescue the Irish retail sector as a whole.”
