Over 50s from County Mayo are being encouraged to start a new business, using their transferrable skills amassed during time in the workforce. Those who have taken early retirement or redundancy payments in particular are being urged to consider starting their own company.
Individuals aged over 50 who are thinking of starting their own business, or in the early stages of a start-up are being invited to a two day national workshop on July 1 and 2 in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone. The “Change, Challenge and Opportunity” two day residential workshop is organised by Mayo County Enterprise Board and the network of County and City Enterprise Boards and will focus on giving participants an insight into what is needed to research, start and develop a business.
Organisers are hoping to attract aspiring entrepreneurs like Aidan McCormack of McCormack Training and Consultancy who set up a business after passing the 50 mark. Mr McCormack, who attended a senior entrepreneur workshop last year, was inspired to set up a successful training and consultancy business. His background was primarily in the dental and healthcare sector, where he worked in senior management positions for most of his career. He is one of the speakers at the event and says he hasn’t looked back since he made the leap to setting up and running his own business.
The two-day workshop for over 50s will include sessions on formulating a business plan, recognising transferrable assets, marketing the business and developing an exit strategy.
Keynote speakers include Aidan McCormack with Justine Negri, founder of Sole Careers and Denis Coen, Elite Performance Mind Coach, as well as other successful entrepreneurs aged 50 and over, sharing their own experiences and advice.
Joanne Grehan, chief executive officer of Mayo County Enterprise Board said: “Ireland like the rest of Europe has an ageing population; people are living and working longer. In addition people are more likely to move between jobs and develop a number of careers. People in their fifties and sixties have better health, are more vibrant and seek to make a dynamic contribution to their communities.”
The two-day residential workshop will also discuss the financial and non-financial supports available to entrepreneurs, how to price a product or service and how to move forward in business. It costs €100 which includes workshop fee, accommodation for one night and meals.
