Westport Courthouse closed due to health and safety risk

Westport Courthouse has been temporarily closed on health and safety grounds. All cases listed for district court and circuit court sittings will be temporarily transferred to Castlebar.

A statement released from the Courts Service says: “Following a report from the Office of Public Works regarding the condition of Westport Courthouse, and in particular the condition of the ceiling in the courtroom, the continued use of this courthouse represents a serious health and safety risk posing an immediate danger to judges, staff, the public, and others using the building.”

The Courts Service is also still engaged in deliberations on the future of court business currently conducted in Swinford, Ballyhaunis, Achill, and Westport. The Board of the Courts Service will discuss this at its meeting in late June.
