O’Mahony calls on people to check on elderly neighbours

Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony is supporting the HSE “Keep Warm Keep Well” campaign which is aimed at ensuring that the elderly are warm and well this winter. The booklet, which is at the centre of the campaign, gives advice on how best to ensure that the elderly get through the winter season without suffering any serious setback.

Deputy O’Mahony said that the campaign deserves the support of everyone. “This is a tough time of year for our elderly with the cold and wet and my plea would be for people to keep an eye out for their relations and neighbours who may be living alone. This is a very positive initiative by the HSE and it has my full support but I suppose the best support we can offer our elderly is to visit them and see how they are. People living on their own love a visit and it can give them a huge lift because they spend so much time on their own.

“We’re all busy nowadays but sometimes a few minutes a week can make a huge difference to someone who lives on their own. It might be the only contact they have with another person all week and it’s something that money couldn’t buy for those people,” he said.
