Councillor Christy Hyland said that a manmade beach at The Quay would really set Westport apart from other towns and should be considered while enhancement works are taking place at The Quay under Smarter travel project funding.
The proposed plans for The Quay, which include new footpaths, pedestrian crossings, designated car parking spaces, and the widening of the carriageway —were approved at the Westport Town Council meeting last Thursday.
Town manager, Martin Keating said that following public consultation and plans on public display that two submissions were received and dealt with. Mr Keating said that it is “a comprehensive ambitious project for The Quay” which “will provide greater connection between The Quay and town from a smarter travel perspective”.
Councillor Myles Staunton said that it is an exciting step for The Quay and he proposed its adoption. This was seconded by Cllr Hyland who added that a beach at The Quay is something that the town badly misses and could be done for a small cost.
The councillor was informed that plans for a beach form part of a masterplan for Roman Island.
