Mayo’s procurement officer promoted to regional role

Mayo County Council’s procurement officer John Maughan has been the subject of a major promotion to the role of the new regional procurement officer for the western region.

The announcement came following an interview process involving candidates from Galway county and city, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and Mayo.

The focus of the post of regional procurement officer is to develop and implement procurement policy and strategy, to co-ordinate procurement practices and to maximise savings and benefits available to local authorities from procurement activities within the region.

Mr Maughan in his post as procurement officer in Mayo County Council over the last number of years has been focused on reducing costs and driving efficiencies. During this period of time Mayo local authorities have continued to achieve improvements in these areas while maintaining the highest standards of public service.

Mayo County Manager Peter Hynes commented: “Procurement has been identified as an activity that can yield significant savings for the local authority sector and this will be further enhanced by collaboration between local authorities at regional and national level. The appointment of Mr Maughan to this regional post is testament to his outstanding work and efforts in the area thus far. I wish him every success in the role.”

Mr Maughan is expected to take up his post on secondment as regional procurement officer in the coming weeks, working with the newly established national service. He will retain local involvement in the Mayo procurement office into the future.

Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Cllr Cyril Burke congratulated Mr Maughan on his promotion: “John has always applied great leadership and management skills in his role and I have no doubt he will continue to do this at a regional level,” he said.
