Lucy Hill and Almha Roche exhibtion at the Linenhall

The intriguingly titled exhibition Crickets Sing With Their Legs continues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. The exhibition comprises recent paintings by Tuam-born Almha Roche and Newport-based Lucy Hill, two artists “with contrasting styles but similar objectives”. The quirky title of the exhibition comes from a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Almha and Lucy explain: “Having each created a body of work, it seems odd to formulate an explanation for something that can't be captured in words, as with the cricket attempting to explain its 'song' through another language. Images are made, music is composed, as the result of a natural need to absorb and reflect the world around us. For this exhibition we have each made our own particular 'song' and presented it in unison to see what new sounds it can make.” The exhibition runs until Saturday January 31. The Linenhall Gallery is open to the general public Monday-Friday from 10am to 5pm; Saturday from 11am to 5.30pm. Admission to exhibitions is free. Further details from the Linenhall. Are you aged 13-15 years? Fancy creating a large-scale painting over four weeks? Here’s your chance to make a start with art in the new year! Over four weeks you will plan your painting, paint it using techniques and methods used by professional artists, and finally add the finishing touches. Each participant will decide on the content, subject matter and style of their painting. Maybe you’re into surrealism, or perhaps you’re new to painting, and want to develop your own style? Artist and workshop facilitator Gráinne O’Reilly will be on hand every step of the way to guide and help you.

Gráinne O’Reilly is one of Mayo’s most prolific painters. She studied Fine Art at Sligo Institute of Technology and her work has been exhibited throughout the country, including solo shows at the Linenhall Arts Centre and Westport’s Custom House Studios. She has extensive experience in designing and facilitating visual art workshops. She’s also laid back and good craic.

The painting workshop takes place over four Wednesday afternoons commencing January 21 from 4.30pm to 5.30pm (continuing January 28, February 4 and 11 ). Cost per head for the workshop series is €25.
