The way Irish politicians are elected to the Dáil is to be debated at the next meeting of the Convention on the Constitution. In advance of the gathering, the chairman of the convention, Tom Arnold, has urged the citizens of Mayo to participate by submitting their views and suggestions on the Dáil electoral system.
Members of the public, along with the Diaspora and representative groups, are being asked to make their voices heard in advance of the discussion.
The next meeting of the convention will take place on May 18 and 19. During that weekend and another weekend in June, members of the convention will discuss whether they want to see the Constitution amended to change the Dáil electoral system.
Submissions can be made through the convention website (constitution.ie ).
Mr Arnold said: “The Convention on the Constitution is citizens’ forum and it is essential that Irish citizens, at home and abroad, make their views known and have their say. It is the democratic right of all Irish citizens to choose the people that they want to represent them and the forthcoming Constitutional Convention discussion will examine the system that we use to elect those people.”
