Music Generation Mayo – youth music hub

Music Generation Mayo, as part of its music education implementation plan for Co Mayo, is establishing a youth music hub, situated in Ballina Arts Centre.

The hub will promote and encourage youth music activities and performances for young people aged 13-18 years. Young musicians are invited to become members of the hub to avail of a range of resources and supports. Members can book timeslots to rehearse with their fellow musicians, record demos, and access advice and guidance from part-time resource worker at the hub, Dennis McCalmont. Members can also avail of a series of music workshops and advice clinics that will be programmed on a continuing basis at a nominal cost.

“This is a great opportunity for teenagers to be supported in their music making,” said McCalmont, “I’m already aware of the huge wealth of talent that is here in Co Mayo and this resource will help to encourage young people in their musical endeavours and provide them with the facilitates and direction needed to further develop their craft.”

To celebrate this new opportunity, Music Generation Mayo is hosting a youth music showcase event at the Ballina Arts Centre on Wednesday May 22. The headline act for the night are Race the Flux, an ambitious rock and electronic west of Ireland based four piece, formed in 2008.

Music Generation Mayo is inviting young Mayo based musicians; bands, solo artists, ensembles, choral groups, etc, in any genre, to perform on the night as part of the showcase. This is a great opportunity; you will perform on the main stage at Ballina Arts Centre with assistance and set-up from a professional sound engineer and lighting technician.

If you or your group are interested in performing as part of the showcase event, visit www.musicgenerationmayo.ie to download a participation form and return it to Dennis McCalmont, resource worker, Music Generation Mayo – Youth Music Hub, Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett St, Ballina, Co Mayo, by Wednesday May 15. Submissions after this date cannot be considered so don’t be late. Tickets for the event are available free from the box office at Ballina Arts Centre, Tel: +353 96 73593.
