Twelve out of 15 beaches in Mayo were found to have good bathing water quality according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ), and all 15 were found to meet the mandatory values as set out by the EU.
Rinroe Beach, Corrowigue, Ross Beach, Killala, and Carrowniskey, Louisburgh all scored sufficiently in an inspection carried out by the EPA, while 12 other beaches were found to have good bathing water conditions.
These 12 are Bertra Beach, Murrisk; Carrowmore Beach, Louisburgh; Dugort Beach, Achill Island; Dooega Beach, Achill Island; Elly Bay, Belmullet; Golden Strand, Achill Island; Keel Beach, Achill Island; Keem Beach, Achill Island; Old Head Beach, Louisburgh; Mullaghroe Beach, Belmullet; Mulranny Beach; and Clare Island, Louisburgh.
The bathing water information was supplied by Mayo County Council which is responsible for monitoring the quality of bathing water in its functional area.
This information is publicised ahead of Ireland’s designated bathing season which runs from June 1 to September 15.
Any decline in waters achieving good status in 2012 has been attributed largely to the impact of excessive rainfall over the summer period last year and overall compliance with the current bathing water standards remains high, the report from the EPA stated.
