Tidy Towns competition

SuperValu retailers in Mayo are calling on the county to get behind this year’s SuperValu TidyTowns competition. Last year there were 37 entries from Mayo with Westport winning the overall county award, in addition Bridie Moran of Westport TidyTowns was recognised as a SuperValu TidyT owns Hero for 2012.

The closing date for receipt of entries for all of this year’s competitions is May 23. Áras Inis Gluaire

The Mullet Players will stage Widows Paradise by Sam Cree this evening April 19, Friday April 26, and Saturday April 27 at 8pm. Misunderstandings and mayhem ensure to make this a night of laughter from start to finish. The play is in aid of Glencastle Special Needs School. Anger issues

Knock Counselling Centre, in conjunction with the Irish Association for Anger Management, is running a two day intensive anger management programme on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21. Temper Your Anger teaches participants how to control their anger and stress levels, using cutting-edge techniques, combined with an experiential approach. Participants will learn strategies to enable them to successfully deal with anger when it arises.

Castlebar ICA

The president and members of the guild would like to thank everyone for their support for the Easter cake sale which was a great success.

A cheque for €2,000 was presented to the director of the Family Centre Castlebar for its suicide liaison project.

Personal Best Programme

This eight-week (one day per week ) training course for unemployed people will commence in Swinford on Monday April 22 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The course covers topics such as exploring self esteem, stress management, motivation skills, embracing change and setting realistic goals which will help you reach your personal best in 2013. Men on the Move

An exercise programme for men is currently taking Mayo by storm. Men on the Move is a programme for men aged 30 and over who want to get active and feel the associated health benefits.

Main Street gathering

At any gathering of neighbours and friends, invariably there is always a story or tale that belongs to a character of times past, and today at PJ Byrne's pub, Claremorris, will be one such event.

A special night of entertainment has been arranged for residents past and present of Main Street. The gathering will commence at 10pm and the special event will be recorded for radio and television. So for a night of stories, song, and craic call to PJ Byrne's on Main Street. MC for the night is Michael Burke with a host of special guests from the music and sporting worlds.

Scrabble competition

Get the word out! A Scrabble fundraiser for the Westport Arts Festival is being held on Thursday April 25 at 7.30pm in The Riverside Restaurant in The Clew Bay Hotel, Westport. The competition will consist of a round robin, semi-finals, and a grand final. Names will be drawn to play in groups of up to four, with each game limited to 45 minutes.

Official Scrabble game rules will be followed. €10 entry fee. Some Scrabble boards will be needed on the night so if you are happy to bring yours along with you on the night, contact [email protected]

Gathering for cancer survivors

Mayo Cancer Support, Rock Rose House, Castlebar, is organising a gathering of cancer survivors in Mayo which will take place on Friday April 26 in the TF Hotel, Castlebar, from 6pm to 9pm.

Tooreen 10k fun walk/run

A 10k fun walk/run will take place tomorrow April 20 at 4pm.

Registration at Tooreen Hall from 2.30pm. Runners (€15 ), walkers (€10 ). Proceeds going to Tooreen National School. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the hall and there will be medals for all finishers. For more information call 087 671 6202.

Mayo’s toddlers need your support

This year the Cow & Gate Big Toddle for Barnardos needs to raise more than €300,000 to support Barnardos’ work with pre-school children in Ireland. A toddle can be held anywhere at any time between May 1 and June 31.

Family fun day in Achill

There will be a family day in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Rock Rose House at Patten’s Bar, Derreens, on May 12.

Stalls open between 12.30pm and 5pm and it will be a lot of fun for the children with bouncing castle and lots of prizes to be won on the day.

Wellbeing for parents

You are invited to an evening about wellbeing for parents on Thursday April 25 at 7pm at The Maple Youth Centre, Bowgate Street, Ballinrobe.

The speaker on the night is motivational speaker and counsellor Fiona Hoban. This is a free event, limited places so booking is essential.

Litter League

Ballinrobe has entered the Mayo County Council Litter League this year. The town will be up against Crossmolina in April, with judging taking place on the week beginning Monday April 22.

Business owners and residents of the town are asked to clean up outside their homes and premises especially during this week.

Over 65s friendship group

Over 65s in Castlebar are invited to April's Over 65's Friendship Group hosted by Castlebar Order of Malta. This month Brian Hoban will be there to give a talk on the history of Castlebar.

The next meeting will take place on April 21 from 3pm to 5pm in the Castlebar Order of Malta, Pavilion Road, Castlebar.

The Clogher Bog loop walk

A guided family friendly walk (approximately 7km ), rated easy, will be held tomorrow April 20 commencing at 10.30am from Clogher Heritage Centre, Clogher, Claremorris.

The walk will be led by local guide Brían Hoban who will share some insights into the flora and fauna of the bogland habitat as well as some titbits of local history.

This is a free event organised by Clogher Environmental Group and will be followed by cup of tea or coffee and a chance to visit Clogher Heritage Cottage and restored Blacksmith’s Forge.
