Castlebar Chamber president Oliver Kelleher has claimed that rates in the town have doubled for some businesses in the last 10 years. Addressing a special meeting of Castlebar Town Council, he told the elected members “businesses are paying more in rates than they are to the banks for repayments or in rents.” Kelleher also said the council was not helping local businesses either when it sources products and services from places like Dublin and Cork, instead of supporting its own rate payers.
