Castlebar councillor, Michael Kilcoyne said that a bye-law to ban the wearing of hoodies in the town should be explored. The councillor said at the town’s joint policing committee meeting on Monday that hoodies cause a problem for gardaí in identifying criminals.
The councillor said that two hooded people stole a bread van recently in town and because they were wearing hoodies it is proving hard to identify them on CCTV. “Hoodies are clearly causing a problem,” he said, adding that there should be a bye-law to ban them.
Inspector Joe McKenna said that hoodies are a disadvantage to gardaí in identification, “But listen, I have three or four hoodies myself,” he said, “and if you start on hoodies the same could be said about hats and scarves.”
Cllr Kilcoyne asked that the town council be asked to further explore the possibility of introducing a bye-law.
