A man who hit a car while drink driving was located by gardaí who followed a trail of oil left at the scene of an accident.
On July 8 2012 at 1.45am gardai received an anonymous report that a car collided with a parked car on Church Road, Ballina, and was driven away.
The front and right front side of the car was damaged. A number plate was left at the scene and a lot of oil. Gardaí followed this trail of oil to where they located the car and a man standing beside it. Jonathan Murray, 46 Amana Estate, Ballina, admitted that he was driving.
He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and a blood sample was provided at the Garda station. The reading was 198mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
The 38-year-old father of two has no previous convictions.
Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €400 and disqualified from driving for three years.
