The removal of one lane of traffic flow at The Mall, Westport, was criticised by area councillor Peter Flynn. The Fine Gael councillor said he is disappointed that area councillors were not consulted about the traffic reduction on a county road.
The councillor said: “It’s the daftest thing I’ve seen in a long time”, as a lot of people coming from the Newport Road took a right turn at The Mall to go up Bridge Street. “I’m all for smart travel and slowing traffic but it has created chaos and madness there at the junction.”
Director of services Martin Keating said the councillor’s views will be taken on board. Mr Keating said the trial period has provided feedback on improved pedestrian movements at this junction but the council is still monitoring traffic implications.
