Castlebar town councillor Eugene McCormack submitted a motion to last night’s meeting of the council requesting that the council provide a section of graveyard for the Muslim community.
Cllr McCormack stated that there are approximately 250 Muslims living in the Castlebar area and they currently have to travel to Ballyhaunis in order to bury their dead. He said: “This can cause added inconvenience and hardship on the death of a relative. It can also be difficult on family members who wish to visit the grave of a loved one. The cost of providing a separate burial area would be minimal as there is considerable space in the new graveyard and there is little in the way of any new infrastructure required. The Muslim people in Castlebar are a peaceful hardworking community who contribute greatly to the fabric of the area. I believe we in the town council have a duty to provide a suitable burial ground to address this issue.”
