The An Post Tour of Sligo 2013 hits the roads of Sligo on the May Bank Holiday weekend and so far interest level suggests that the event will have a record entry. To date close on 1,000 cyclists have registered, and with numbers capped at 2,000 those wishing to cycle in scenic Sligo on Sunday. May 5 are advised to register early to avoid disappointment. Individuals new to the sport and more seasoned cyclists are signing up for the various events with the choice of routes including the 60km Lough Gill Circuit, the 100km Innisfree Tour, and the 160km Ox Mountain Challenge.
Cyclists are guaranteed some stunning scenery as they pedal through the Sligo countryside while also encountering some challenging climbs in the longer events as they take on the mighty Ox Mountains. With some 200 marshals on duty along the route, cyclists will get lots of encouragement, while the all-important food stops will enable cyclists to sustain their energy levels. On completion of the tour, cyclists can proudly wear the event cycling jersey which they receive at sign in.
The tour will be preceded by a family fun day on Saturday May 4 which gives young enthusiastic cyclists a chance to get on their bikes. Children of nine years and upwards can take part in the 10k Hazelwood Spin while those of six years and over can cycle the 2K Bike Trail in the grounds of the Institute of Technology Sligo. Apart from the cycling events there will be a great range of entertainment including a cycling acrobat show, BMX display, stilt walkers, unicyclists, jugglers, clowns, face painters, and much more, making it a wonderful family fun day for all. This weekend of cycling in Sligo is co-ordinated by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and is part of the An Post Cycle Series, a joint initiative of the Irish Sports Council and An Post. A record entry is expected this year, so all intending participants are advised to get their entries in early as numbers are capped at 2,000. Check out www.tourofsligo.ie
