It was the renowned St Anne’s club that stood head and shoulders above other clubs at the national championships for male boxers age 11, 12, and 13 years last weekend in the National Stadium. Three additional titles for the club in addition to the previous three secured two weeks ago in the Boy 4/Youth 1 division showed the strength of the club throughout all age groups.
There was great delight from all Mayo and even the Connacht clubs when Declan McDonagh won the first juvenile national title for Claremorris club since 1999 . McDonagh won the Boy 1, 42kg title defeating name sake Edward McDonagh from Clonoe on a score of 12-7.
Rory Brennan won the first of three titles for the St Anne’s club in the Boy 1, 63kg division defeating Anthony Gallagher (Townland ) on a score of 6-5. The following day in the Boy 3 division the St Anne’s club added two additional titles to their impressive tally in consecutive contests. Kacper Buru won the 66Kg division defeating Keelon Gibson (Convoy ) on a comfortable score of 11-5. Immediately after Buru’s win Bert Zalewski lifted the 70Kg title on a score of 7-4 against Connie McDonagh (Dungarvan ). Mayo clubs had nine boxers involved in the finals but five were unsuccessful in winning titles. David Sweeney (Ballyhaunis ) lost to Conor Gleeson (Old School ) 11-8 in the Boy 3, 86Kg division, Eric Nash (Knockmore ) was defeated by Jason Harty Rathkeale on a score of 7-5 in the Boy 3, 50Kg class, Owney Mac Donagh was defeated by Michael McDonnell (Darndale ) in the Boy 1, 52 Kg class, Yannick Scheerer (St Anne’s ) contest was stopped in round three with Martin McDonagh (Dealgan ) taking the Boy 1, 70Kg title and Jordan Muldoon (Ardnaree ) was defeated in the final of the Boy 1, 29Kg division by Terry Donoghue (St Michael’s Athy ) 11-7. So far it has been a brilliant season for the St Anne’s club, Female boxers will be in action next month in the stadium and no doubt more titles will be on the agenda for the legendary club in Mayo.
Ballina boxing club holding charity white collar boxing event
Ballina boxing club is holding a white collar boxing event on Saturday April 27 in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina. All the proceeds from this event will be shared between two different charities. The chosen charities are the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice palliative care unit at Ballina Hospital and the Fight Martin McGarry fund, set up to help the renowned boxing coach from Chicago who is battling a rare liver disease which has already claimed the lives of some of his family members. Competing on the night will be local male and females, from rugby players to teachers to hairdressers who have been coached by Ballina boxing club for the past number of weeks.
